Traffic Case Records in St. Louis City County
St. Louis City Municipal Court belongs to the 22nd Judicial Circuit. It holds original jurisdiction over City ordinance traffic matters. Its docket reaches beyond traffic. Listed municipal categories include alcohol or drug, earnings-tax, truancy, problem-property, refuse, housing-code, and minor criminal cases. So a traffic case record sits on the municipal path. The court itself runs inside the 22nd Circuit structure.
Plenty of matters stay outside this lane. The Municipal Court does not take ordinary civil suits, divorce, evictions, protection orders, or jury trials. State felony and misdemeanor cases are off the path too. Parking citations fall outside the path too. For a City ordinance traffic ticket, the public result can show the citation number, court and location, charge or ordinance, citation or filing date, scheduled date, docket entries, disposition, plea, payment or balance information, and any exposed failure-to-appear or warrant status where public.
St. Louis City County Municipal Court Traffic Jurisdiction
Do not confuse the two counters. Municipal Court customer service is separate from the Circuit Clerk's general state-court records window. That window serves the broader 22nd Judicial Circuit record system. The City keeps the Municipal Court service location at 1520 Market St., Suite 1120. That split matters most when you hold a citation rather than a circuit case number. Note that Municourt.net, the former service, is retired as a search route. The City now directs municipal case searches to Case.net.
Match the office to the court named on the citation before calling anyone. A state criminal case or a civil filing does not become a municipal traffic record. That holds true even if it arose in St. Louis City. A City traffic or ordinance matter, though, belongs with the Municipal Court instructions. Its Case.net circuit selection goes with it.
St. Louis City County Traffic Ticket Lookups
The City's municipal violation-search instructions lay out two Case.net routes. The fastest is a complete citation or case number. No number in hand? A litigant-name search works too, once you narrow the results to the municipal location and traffic case type. Be patient with fresh tickets. New citations can take several days to appear, so a blank result right after issuance may just mean the docket has not caught up, not that no case exists.
- Open Missouri Case.net in Chrome or Edge, the browsers the City recommends for this process.
- For a known citation, choose Case Number Search, select City of St. Louis - 22nd Judicial Circuit, enter the number shown at the upper right of the citation, and select Find.
- For a name search, choose Litigant Name Search, select the same circuit, enter last and first name, and add the optional date of birth in MM/DD/YYYY format.
- Narrow the name search to Location St. Louis City Municipal and Case Type Traffic/Municipal. Select the result, use Get Related Cases if needed, and choose the desired case.
- Save the exact court date, case number, and current status from the result. Contact Municipal Court customer service when a needed record remains unavailable.
Missing cases before January 2, 2024 go through Municipal Court customer service instead. The older-record inquiry works several ways. Visit in person at 1520 Market St., Suite 1120 with picture ID. Call 314-622-3231, email stlccweb@stlouis-mo.gov, or fax 314-622-3223. Customer service runs Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding City holidays. One more wrinkle: an eligible public electronic item in the 22nd Circuit system may not open remotely. Ask court staff about the public terminal and File Viewer access path.
St. Louis City County Citation Search Fields
The City-specific workflow runs on the statewide portal. But everything hinges on picking the local circuit and municipal filters. Grab the number printed on the upper right of the original citation. That citation number is real, not a made-up sample. A charge code is a different animal. It is an eight-digit code, generally beginning with 9. It belongs with the payable-offense schedule rather than standing in for the full case or citation number.
| Case.net field or control | St. Louis City County entry | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Search mode | Case Number Search or Litigant Name Search | Choose the route that matches the information available. |
| Search for cases in | City of St. Louis - 22nd Judicial Circuit | Limits the search to the City municipal court path. |
| Citation or case number | Number at the upper right of the citation | Direct citation lookup input. Do not substitute a charge code. |
| Name narrowing | Last name, first name, optional DOB MM/DD/YYYY | Use Location St. Louis City Municipal and Case Type Traffic/Municipal. |
| Charge lookup | First five digits of the eight-digit code; disregard final 990 when applicable | Checks the City payable-offense table. |
Traffic Court Dates in St. Louis City County
The printed date on a citation is only a starting point. Case.net gives the better current check. The docket can show a later setting, a disposition, or a status change. Search the citation. Open the selected case. Then compare the scheduled date against the docket entries. The case record may display a court date, time, case type, location, citation or filing date, and status. Confirm again close to travel. Municipal calendars can change by court order without much notice.
| Citation or case number | The number from the citation's upper-right corner, used to retrieve the municipal case. |
|---|---|
| Court and location | City of St. Louis - 22nd Judicial Circuit, narrowed in a name search to St. Louis City Municipal. |
| Date and time | The current scheduled appearance or other setting shown in the citation record; a docket update can supersede an earlier printed date. |
| Case status | Publicly exposed pending, disposed, plea, balance, payment-review, failure-to-appear, or warrant information, if the result displays it. |
| Charge detail | Ordinance or charge description and, where needed, the separate City charge-code lookup. |
St. Louis City County In-Person Traffic Dates
Since January 1, 2025, ordinary Municipal Court dates happen in person. Trials, sworn testimony, and payment-review dates are in person too. A virtual appearance is not the default fallback. The court requires a written good-cause request plus a judge's approval. The City's virtual court information applies only after the court approves that route.
Bring photo identification and the case number when you visit Municipal Court. A current date in Case.net identifies the setting, nothing more. It does not authorize a virtual appearance or change the court's instructions. Court news, a weather notice, or a clerk direction can shift a session. Verify the replacement date through the live case record and the City Municipal Court notices.
Note: St. Louis City County traffic court dates should be checked against the live citation record before travel. Notices and court orders can alter a scheduled session.
Paying a Ticket vs Fighting It
A minor traffic or Metro fare matter that qualifies can be resolved before the first court date. The tool is Case.net Plead and Pay. Start by selecting City of St. Louis - 22nd Judicial Circuit. Then enter the full case number printed on the citation. Choose Plead and Pay to reach the plea screen. Understand what that route means. That route counts as a guilty plea and a waiver. The Missouri Department of Revenue gets notified. That is not the same as showing up to contest the charge. Partial payment and payment plans are not offered through the pre-court option.
| Paying an eligible matter | Fighting or seeking court action |
|---|---|
| Plead and Pay before court is a guilty plea and waiver for eligible minor traffic or Metro fare cases. | Appear as instructed to address the charge before the Municipal Court rather than using the guilty-plea route. |
| PayByWeb is available for fully disposed cases; the specific case flow may offer full or partial payment. | Trials and sworn testimony are in person under the current Municipal Court policy. |
| Use the full case number, not merely a charge code, and verify eligibility in the live payment path. | A municipal judge's decision may have a separate trial de novo route with a strict deadline described below. |
Failure to appear or warrant status: A one-time hardship recall may be available without cash bond when the person appears with valid photo ID. Otherwise, the stated cash bond is $50 per case, capped at $200 unless a judge orders more. The special-issues docket is generally Tuesday at 11 a.m.; request it through customer service by 10 a.m. rather than assuming a walk-in will be heard.
St. Louis City County Traffic Payment Channels
How you pay changes what you must send and when. The City's traffic payment instructions cover online, mail, dropbox, and in-person paths. PayByWeb applies only to fully disposed cases. The pre-court Case.net route stays limited to eligible matters. The payment overview sets the in-person minimum at $50. Any balance left on a payment-review date requires an appearance.
- Mail: sign the reverse-side Appearance, Plea of Guilty and Waiver form, include a money order or certified check and a self-addressed stamped envelope, and send it at least three days before court. Do not mail cash or a personal check.
- Red dropbox: use the locked red box on the Market Street side of 1520 Market, immediately left of the entrance. Seal the citation, signed form, and money order or certified check in an envelope. No cash is accepted.
- In person: take photo ID and the case number to 1520 Market, Suite 1120. The City lists cash, money order, certified or cashier's check, IOLTA check, and Visa or MasterCard debit or credit, with listed exclusions for American Express, personal checks, and gift cards.
Two Records: Court File and Driver File
One citation can produce two separate government records, and each has its own custodian. The court-side record is the Municipal Court case file. It tracks the citation, the City charge, the setting, docket activity, the plea, and the disposition. It also covers public payment or balance information. For that court case, use Municipal Court customer service or Case.net.
- Court file
- Kept through the City Municipal Court and the 22nd Judicial Circuit case system. It answers what occurred in the municipal case and when the court expects a response.
- Driver file
- Kept separately by the Missouri Department of Revenue. An eligible pre-court guilty plea is reported there, but a Municipal Court case lookup does not retrieve or replace that separate state-held file.
The court file is the tool for finding a citation or court date. It also shows docket events and the disposition. The state keeps a separate record with its own custodian. Why does that matter? A blank or thin court result says nothing. A different record system may hold much more than the docket shows.
St. Louis City County Warrant and Recall Options
A public municipal record may show a failure-to-appear or warrant indicator. What to do next depends on the court's current instructions. The City's bench-warrant information explains the one-time hardship recall. It also covers the cash-bond path. Bring photo ID for the in-person hardship process. Before trusting an older docket entry, confirm the case status with Municipal Court customer service.
There is also a limited out-of-town docket option that calls for a notarized written request. A $150 bond applies to each warrant case. Housing, earnings-tax, nuisance, solicitation, prostitution, truancy, and DUI or DWI cases are among the exclusions. That option does not replace a Case.net lookup. It also does not waive eligibility rules.
Traffic Record Copy Fees
Case.net offers its public index as a free online service. There is no separate search fee. The City Municipal Court posts no current fee for a traffic-file copy or certification. Ask Municipal Court customer service for the current estimate. Also ask whether the item is held there or through the Circuit Clerk. Keep record-copy costs apart from fine money. A traffic fine, bond, or payment amount is never a copy price.
| Traffic record item | Amount located | How to proceed |
|---|---|---|
| Case.net public index search | No separate official search fee located | Use the City municipal Case.net instructions and record the citation or case number. |
| City Municipal Court plain or certified traffic copy | Fee not located in official sources | Request the current amount and copy path from Municipal Court customer service. |
| Circuit Clerk copy, if the record is held by that office | $0.25 per page | Official Missouri local-court fee source; confirm custodian and estimate first. |
| Certification or authentication through the Circuit Clerk | $1.50 certification; $2.50 authentication per document | These are distinct Clerk fee-source amounts, not a posted Municipal Court quote. |
St. Louis City County Trial De Novo Records
A trial de novo is a separate post-decision municipal procedure, not a second Case.net search. The City directs people to file the request at 1520 Market St. within 10 days after the municipal judge's decision. No extensions are granted. A guilty plea cannot be appealed this way. The current City page lists a $30 filing fee. Do not confuse it with a copy fee or a figure from a general fee schedule.
Once the court transmits the matter, the Circuit Court mails information out. Hold onto the municipal case number, docket date, and filing receipt so the record can be tracked into the next court stage. For procedural questions or a missing traffic record, the City offers a local contact. Call Municipal Court customer service at 314-622-3231.
